Commemorating the bravery and valour of the 888,246 fallen British and Commonwealth
soldiers of World War I, congregations from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
invite their local community neighbours to join with them in sharing the story of “The
Christmas Truce” this holiday season.
In the midst of World War I, one of the most violent conflicts of human history, German and
Allied soldiers stepped out of their trenches, shook hands, and observed a series of
ceasefires. It was a time when tensions paused for a moment in December 1914 as soldiers
from both sides remembered what it meant to be peaceable and honourable.
100 years ago this Christmas on the battle fields of the Western Front, soldiers quieted their
weapons of war and ventured into “no man’s land” where they exchanged food and
souvenirs, held joint burial ceremonies for their fallen friends, sang carols, and even played a
game of football.
It was a time when the brotherhood of man gave rise to men at their best in the worst of
circumstances. “The Christmas Truce” presentation depicts how young men fighting against
each other captured the true meaning of Christmas by replacing hatred and hostility with
humanity and hope. For further information view the following link http://christmas-truce.com/
