Hands that really Helped!

In each community there will always be wonderful opportunities for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help others.  Hull 1st congregation found such an opportunity and on 27 June 2015 a group of more than 20 members had the opportunity of joining others to rescue a ‘secret’ garden in an old part of the historic city of Kingston upon Hull.

Working on clearing paths of weeds and labouring in helping build a raised bed for planting food were some of the tasks which needed completing. A small greenhouse and many plant pots had been donated so the team cleaned the area and put up staging for plants while others had fun painting terracotta flower pots. One woman in the group spent hours breaking up recycled slabs of York stone, which was extremely hard work, for building a herb spiral.

This garden was originally prepared for a group of visually impaired people to enjoy, but sadly, was abandoned when the charity responsible moved away from the area, and it soon became a wilderness.

It is hoped that the garden will have a very useful new life mainly as a nursery to provide seeds and seedlings to help people become more self-sufficient.  The garden may also provide free food from the seeds being planted in roadside planters which are being placed on some of the streets of Hull.
