Members of the Wandsworth area, in South London, responded positively to the encouragement of Church Leaders to become involved in serving our local community. On this occasion they took up the challenge of selling poppies on half of the Royal British Legion (RBL). The RBL is a charitable organisation that was established more than 90 years ago. The Poppy Appeal is a significant part of its work that raises funds to support current and former service personnel and their families in a variety of ways, such as offering financial and welfare assistance.

Volunteers included groups of young men and young women, aged between 12 – 18 years, together with adult members of the congregations. Across the area collection took place in front of high street stores, supermarkets and outside tube stations. Twenty eight members offered approximately 66 hours of service. Due to the positive relationship Kerry Miller developed with the Local Poppy Appeal Organiser in the local borough, her help was requested on a second occasion. She gladly accepted and commented that she felt privileged to have been asked to offer her service to this worthy cause.
Other members commented on their positive experiences, with particular reference to the generosity of the public. It truly was a privilege to give our service to those who have sacrificed and are sacrificing a great deal for the welfare of a nation.
This is the first time the congregations in the Wandsworth area have participated in The Poppy Appeal and we hope this will be the start of a very long future tradition.
