Edinburgh, Scotland - President Paul Rand, a senior lay leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland, addressed members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) this week, sharing a message about the importance of intentional living in an age of digital distraction and competing demands.

He spoke during the Parliament’s weekly Time for Reflection, a unique tradition that invites representatives from a variety of faiths and belief systems to open the parliamentary week with brief messages of hope and inspiration. This practice reflects Scotland’s commitment to recognising the diverse spiritual and philosophical voices that contribute to its public life.

Drawing on his experience as a father, educator and community leader, President Rand encouraged MSPs to reflect on how they spend their time and to prioritise what matters most. He spoke candidly about the pressures of modern life and shared how daily moments of quiet reflection help him stay grounded.

Reflecting on his experience in Parliament, President Rand said:

“It was an honour to stand before parliamentarians and share a message about slowing down and focusing on what truly matters. As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe His teachings call on us to live purposefully, to love our neighbours and to serve those around us. In a world full of distractions, we can find greater peace and joy by living with intention and keeping our hearts and actions centred on Him.”

President Rand serves as the volunteer leader of the Dundee Scotland Stake, a regional group of Latter-day Saint congregations. He was accompanied to Parliament by Dawn Keogh of the Glasgow Stake.

Stephen Kerr MSP was among those who welcomed President Rand to The Scottish Parliament. He commented:

“It was a privilege to welcome President Rand to Holyrood and hear his thoughtful message. His emphasis on intentional living and service resonates deeply with the values we strive to uphold in public life. In a time when society is increasingly fragmented and distracted, voices like his remind us of the importance of reflection, compassion, and community.”

President Rand concluded his remarks with an invitation to the MSPs gathered in Edinburgh:

“Whatever your belief, give yourself regular time to quietly contemplate, serve others and spend quality time with the people you love.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a global Christian faith with more than 17 million members worldwide, including thousands in Scotland. The Church has been established in Scotland since 1839 and, in April 2024, announced plans to build its first temple in the country, which will be located in Edinburgh.
