How the Church of Jesus Christ Is Helping Earthquake Victims in Türkiye and Syria

The Church is committed to helping Turks and Syrians recover and rebuild

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is sending an initial shipment of food, clothes, blankets, medical supplies, medicines, shelters, water and sanitation kits and other items to victims of the February 6 earthquakes (7.8 and 7.6 magnitude) in Türkiye and Syria.

This important work is being done in collaboration with several relief organizations who have a long-standing presence on the ground in the two countries. Additional organizations are quickly being reviewed to expand the reach of Church funds.

The immediate aftermath of the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria is only the beginning of a long healing process. As is the case everywhere it has a presence, the Church of Jesus Christ seeks to meet the long-term needs of people affected by disasters. The faith is committed to helping Turks and Syrians emotionally, physically and spiritually recover and rebuild their societies.

The Church’s Europe Central Area Emergency Response Committee (organized in February 2022 in response to the conflict in Ukraine) is coordinating with the Middle East/Africa North Area to make this happen.

“We continue to mourn with our brothers and sisters in Türkiye and Syria,” said Elder Rubén V. Alliaud, a member of the Europe Central Area Presidency and the Emergency Response Committee chair. “We are deeply grateful to join with skilled humanitarian organizations and give these beloved people comfort and care in their critical hour of need.”

Church leaders in Europe invite Latter-day Saints to help local Turkish and Syrian community groups and organizations in any way they can. The large Turkish and Syrian diasporas in some countries can help identify needs not covered in the larger humanitarian projects.

Latter-day Saints in the area are also encouraged to use JustServe.org (if available in their country) to create and find community service opportunities. Church members and others can also donate to the faith’s humanitarian aid efforts. The Saints are asked to be patient as service projects emerge.

“If we turn our hearts to serve, we will not only help others but will also strengthen our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ,” Elder Alliaud said. “Our understanding of Him and in the power of His Atonement will be greatly increased.”
