Cardiff Stake's 'One Present Less, One Gift More' Initiative A Success

The First Presidency asked members worldwide to plan a Day of Service this year to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Church Welfare programme.  Cardiff Stake chose to work with local charities supporting the homeless.  The charities identified the Top Five most needed items during the winter and for the past few months the members of the stake have been collecting the items.  The appeal has been called "One Present Less, One Gift More."  The idea is that members give up a Christmas present in order to provide a gift for the needy.

The Cardiff Stake Conference was held on December 3-4 and the gifts were collected at the Stake Centre.    The stake members were extremely generous with the One Present Less, One Gift More drive and it took 20 volunteers and four vans to deliver the goods!  The Salvation Army and The Wallich Clifford gratefully accepted the gifts for distribution.  It has been an outstanding effort by the Cardiff Stake.

A rough estimate of the donations include:

  • 350 tins of food
  • 200 packets of biscuits
  • 200 hygiene kits
  • 150 containers of pot noodles
  • 150 kg of sugar
  • 95 sleeping bags
  • 60 pairs of mittens/thermal stockings and scarves
  • 30 jackets

A big thanks to the Saints.  The stake presidency appreciates what they have done. The Salvation Army bus that received part of the donations almost did not have enough room for all the gifts!  As we delivered the gifts, homeless men were astonished that we were  there, bring them things like "new clean sleeping bags" which they truly appreciated and thanked us for.
