Sixteen year old Connor Herbertson, a priest in the Basildon congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, recently won gold in the National Schools Athletics for the discus. In addition to winning a gold medal, Connor was one of only two students to break the national record on a cold blustery day in Birmingham.
Connor, who is broadly self-taught in the discipline, was entered by his school PE teacher at a local level two years ago “because he was a big strong lad”. After watching some athletes throw the discus on YouTube, he competed and won the local, regional and came second in the National Finals that year. Due to the Olympics in 2012, there was no national event held, but Connor continued to train and improve during that time.
“I was really focused on breaking the record and on the day I was disappointed that it was raining and windy, which make spinning and getting a good distance very difficult” said Connor. “I was nervous travelling to Birmingham with my parents, but I had received a blessing that morning which said I would be calm and relaxed. As soon as the competition started I did relax and actually broke the old record with my very first throw.”
In the last few months Connor has joined a local athletics club (The Basildon Beagles) and is participating regularly. “Competing on a regular basis is helping me to improve and I would love to represent my country at the Olympics someday – but I know that takes a great deal of effort and dedication.” With supportive family and friends, he is keen to find an opportunity to excel in the sport.
